Accidents in Sumter County

Sumter County, Florida has a population of 113,589, with a median age of 66. According to Well Florida and the Florida Department of Health in 2017, unintentional accidents were the fourth-leading cause of death for residents in Sumter, behind only cancer, heart disease, and chronic lower respiratory disease.

Perhaps the most significant risk to residents in The Villages and the surrounding areas are motor vehicle accidents. With over 16 million licensed drivers in the state of Florida and nearly 17 million vehicles (Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles statistics from 2016), accidents are common on the roads and highways across the Sunshine State. The vehicles most commonly involved in fatal or incapacitating accidents were passenger cars, but low-speed vehicles (like golf carts) also made the list with five fatalities and 30 incapacitating injuries in 2016 alone.

Drivers aged 65-67 had the highest number of fatal or incapacitating injury collisions among older drivers 65 and up. Some of the most commonly cited reasons for these collisions include:

  • Failure to yield the right-of-way
  • Failure to stay in the proper lane
  • Exceeding posted speed
  • Driving too close for conditions
  • Improper turning
  • Improper backing
  • Following too closely

In Sumter County, specifically, there were 1,533 collisions which resulted in 17 fatalities and 926 injuries.

While motor vehicle accidents comprise a large portion of injury accidents or accidental deaths in Florida, they are far from the only cause. Among residents 55-64, accidental poisoning, firearms, falls, suffocation, and drowning all listed among the top six causes of death. For residents 65 and older, falls actually ranked higher than motor vehicle accidents, with 2,755 fatal injury accidents in 2016, compared to 642 vehicle-related deaths.
